Could the residential areas immediately adjacent to Webster Street please receive some attention? If we are encouraging walkable, bikeable and transit friendly shopping districts, then sanitation needs to be provided.

Is this in front of someone's property? It looks as if someone needs to do some yard work and sweep up along here. I'm not familiar with this location but property owners as well as residence need to start stepping up and clean up their neighborhoods.

@Fred this was taken along the sidewalk strip along Haight as I was walking but I am sorry, I disagree that it is the property owners job to pick up the litter that the foot traffic is leaving. Residents living close to Webster would have to spend hours every single day cleaning up garbage that is not even their garbage to clean up. If we really are going to discuss who needs to take ownership it is the people walking, and just dropping their trash but that is an age old problem. I also disagree that residents on one side of the street get the benefit of clean gutters and street/sidewalks while those on the other side do not reap the same benefits and are left to either 1) look at trash all day, every day or 2) take time away from their families every day to pick up trash not belonging to them.

I agree people should not litter and I own property just off of park street with the same issue. Just remember there is always a price to be paid and it will be less parking on a certain day of the week and more parking tickets for those in the area who forget to not park there. I would rather sweep up the gutter myself than have less parking but that is just me. Those photos show something that has not been maintained in quite some time. To each his own on how to solve the filth people leave behind. I'm not against smokers except when they are the ones filling these strips and gutters with cigarette butts.

I have checked this area out and we have No Parking Street Sweeping signs on the odd side of the 600 block of Haight and everything looks good. There are a lot of cars in this neighborhood on the even side of the street (600 block of Haight) and we do come down to sweep, but with all the cars we cannot get next to the curb. There are two solutions: Each neighbor keeps their property and curb area clean or the neighbors get a petition together to have No Parking Street Sweeping signs installed on their side of the block. That is my issue Gail, the city needs to handle the petition. It should not be my job to canvas the neighborhood and have to lobby for this. The trash issue is a city issue. The trash is a problem. There are cars on BOTH sides of the street, equally. The city cleans the odd side so yes, of course it looks nice. If people were littering city hall, someone would pick it up. I expect the same treatment in the space around my house where my children live and play.

The city needs to change the way that it approves street sweeping. My block also does not have street sweeping. On the rare occasion when a car is not parked in front of my house, I sweep the gutter.

In higher density neighborhoods, parking is at a premium. Older apartment buildings have very limited parking. People are reluctant to approve no parking for street sweeping because of the lack of parking. Either the City should require no parking during street sweeping or sweep the area by hand. The current program is incredibly discriminatory because wealthier low density neighborhoods do not have the same level of parking problems; the rich get their gutters swept while those in more modest neighborhoods have to sweep their own gutters. Otherwise, the trash blocks the storm drains causing flooding -- another result of a public policy that benefits those in certain neighborhoods.

We should not have to canvas our neighborhoods. Many apartment buildings are locked and we would have to sneak in to get signatures. Also, it simply is not safe. Also, not all are able to climb multi-story buildings. The process needs to be revisited and made more fair.
