Description
After dropping my elementary schooler off this morning at Otis, I was standing on the corner of San Jose & High Street just now talking to a friend and I once again saw a middle school student almost get hit by a car crossing High Street on San Jose. This is the exact same corner where my daughter almost got hit last week, and I'm sure this happens every single day – I am glad I was there to stop the driver in time, and grateful that there are more near-misses and no collisions.
My wife wrote to you both last month, and I am writing again to underscore how much we need some better traffic controls at High St. and San Jose. A pedestrian-controlled flashing light crosswalk system like we have at San Jose and Fernside would be a really great and urgently needed addition to the intersection.
Relatedly, I was talking with the crossing guard who works at Fillmore and High St. yesterday afternoon and she mentioned how terrible that intersection is as well. I help coordinate the Otis Elementary Safety Patrol program that helps with traffic safety in the mornings, but we don't have enough volunteers to do that in the afternoons as well. I think it would be great to have another pedestrian-controlled flashing light crosswalk at Fillmore and High St. as well.
Thank you for your time and your concern, and I am happy to do whatever I can to help make this happen before any other kids get hurt.
