Description
Cars going westbound on Central often miss the 5th Street stop sign and fail to stop till it is nearly too late. Blinking neon light in barber shop window actually helped make people notice the stop sign, but the barber has moved it, and it is not their duty to provide traffic safety in this fashion. Anyone trying to turn from 5th onto Central gets missed by westbound traffic, and there have been near accidents of people nearly hitting me or others. Pedestrians are also often missed, and I fear for them and bicyclists as well. Blinking stop sign light and blinking pedestrian crossing signals would help the area. Too many near-misses in the area!

Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. In April, 2021, the City Council approved final concepts for major safety improvements to Central Ave from Sherman to Main, including traffic calming measures, safer pedestrian crossings, and bicycle facilities. Construction is expected to begin in late 2022. More information is here: www.alamedaca.gov/central

This would include various interventions to slow down auto speeds and make the street safer for people walking and biking. More information here: www.activealameda.org/Recommendations#section-3

Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. We will use street safety reports, including yours, in combination with crash data and equity indicators to prioritize and design street safety investments. This evaluation will generally happen on an annual basis, with some exceptions for clear and pressing trends. Issues that the City deems to be immediate safety concerns will be elevated for quick action.
