Description
This is a crazy intersection. From Central, a left onto Sherman often has conflicting oncoming traffic that may or may not be going straight or left. From Sherman, a left onto Central often seems like it conflicts with oncoming traffic that seems like it's going straight, but in reality forgot to turn on their turn signal. For a pedestrian, it's having to cross 4 signalized intersections just to cross one street. This intersection desperately needs a traffic circle.

Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. We will use street safety reports, including yours, in combination with crash data and equity indicators to prioritize and design street safety investments. This evaluation will generally happen on an annual basis, with some exceptions for clear and pressing trends. Issues that the City deems to be immediate safety concerns will be elevated for quick action.
In April, 2021, the City Council approved final concepts for major safety improvements to Central Ave from Sherman to Main, including a roundabout on Sherman. Data shows that roundabouts reduce fatal crashes by 90%. Construction is expected to begin in late 2022. More information is here: www.alamedaca.gov/central
